What’s the trick to walking more than 15,000 miles?

DawnEasy. Get in the habit. Walk every day, regularly.

We’ve just wrapped up our 15th year of daily walks to the beach at dawn. We started with an irregular schedule in the fall of 1995, but got into the daily routine early in 1996, exact date unknown. We were lured into the process by friends and former neighbors, but once we got the morning bug, we were hooked.

We miss a few days each year. Some because we’re traveling and don’t have access to a safe place for walking, or are still in flight. There are a few days each year where the weather is too wet and windy for us, and perhaps a few more days missed when one of us is sick. Figuring that we miss perhaps 21 days per year, and walk about 3 miles on average, our 15 years translates into more than 15,000 miles of walking, most of it right here in Kaaawa.

The world looks much different, and typically much better, at dawn than it does mid-day. And the camera’s eye also appreciates the morning light.

This was the view this morning. A suitable way to greet the beginning of Year 16.

Around 2004-05 I was logging about 70 miles a week..walking! Dropped nearly 50 pounds doing it and was lots of fun. I’ve done 7 marathons in a row since 2004…again all walking, but I’ve noticed the asphalt pavement has really messed up my knees, perhaps I should walk on the beach more myself.
