Advice needed: Nikon lens misbehaving.

Here’s a question from a friend of mine for the photographers lurking out there.

I have a Nikon 55-200mm VR auto focus lens that won’t auto focus or lock on the target for my D-3000 Nikon body. Can you recommend a good local camera shop to trouble shoot it/send it to Nikon for repair?

Any advice or suggestions?

Photo Tech in lower Makiki has repaired a couple of lenses for me. Their website mentions Nikon, so maybe they could help your friend. They’re at 1413 S. King St. Ste. 201. Enter from the parking lot in back and walk up. Phone (808) 952-6161. Closed on weekends.

First I would call Nikon support-they are very good 800-645-6689. If that doesn’t work See Hal at Ritz Camera in Ala Moana, he can either show you what are doing wrong or tell you where to send it. There is a Nikon repair shop in California.

Are you sure you have the camera set to autofocus? If it won’t focus other lenses check the switch near the bottom of the lens mount.

Its set to AF, but won’t lock on to any target. But I notice that a little LED lite next to the shutter button lites when I try to focus.

Once in a great while I notice that my Canon lens won’t “lock” AF onto a target, then I remember that I have it in “servo” mode instead of “single-shot”

Servo will continuously try to autofocus and will give little confirmation whereas single-shot will lock on target and stay there until I let go the shutter button (or in my case the AF button on the back of the camera).

    Could this be the issue?
