Huge heroin problem over there.
That is both true and utterly wrong. Portland has problems, but they generally do not change the fact that it is a beautiful and welcoming city. The Portland metro area has a population larger than all of the islands put together. The usual big city problems are a tiny part of the fabric that makes a city and not a factor in most people’s everyday lives.
I have been there several times in the last few months, my folks live across the river from downtown… I can personally attest that Portland remains a great city.
I was curious so looked it up. Most recent data I could find has Portland over the national average in opioid deaths, but in the middle. Not everyone dies from an overdose so I surmise that if the underlying problem really is “huge” they are at least doing what they can to mitigate the risk of death in Portland. Thus the naloxone awareness campaign. It is a problem that is being addressed. Death rates are highest in West Virginia. I am not as thorough an investigator as our proprietor, but I am assuming they are not doing much about it in WV. Hmm…where would I rather live? Actually I recently decided to retire to the Portland area.
