I stopped over to visit with my mother yesterday morning. She didn’t get to make her planned Mother’s Day visit to Kaaawa because we were worried about flooding on the highway through Waikane. So she and my sister are now planning on coming out on Sunday to celebrate my mom’s 97th birthday.
When I mentioned the recent string of thefts and burglaries in Kaaawa, she recalled the old days when she would leave the kitchen door unlocked so that the delivery man from the market could bring her order inside and put the perishable products into the refrigerator.
I pulled out my iPhone, set the camera to video, and asked her to repeat the story. She was more than willing.

This so reminded me of the situation in the small town in which I lived in Kansas. My grandmother would call her grocery list to one of the town grocers and it was delivered. I believed that one of my uncles paid the bill once a month. Doors were never locked. People had to much respect for others.
Same here.
We had the milk man, the egg man, and bread man. Once or twice a week, or whenever, they would just come in the back door, whether we were home or not, and fill a standing order, or one we left on a form they provided.
Those were the days, eh?
We’ve come a long ways . . . and fallen apart.
It’s so nice to have a mother who does not have dementia like mine does. Happy Birthday!
I spoke with Lt. Espinda of HPD earlier this week about our crime wave. He is the lead detective responsible for our area and works out of the Kailua station. He can be contacted at 262-6555.
He is aware of the crime wave but was not aware of the wealth of info being posted here and on kaaawa.net. Please contact him and give him any info anyone has on suspicious activity.
I also spoke with a community outreach officer and they are very happy to come out and help us form a Neighborhood Watch group and tell us how to watch for suspicious behavior, assign “Block Captains”, etc. My wife and I would be happy to host an evening meeting at our home on Hi’iaka road for anyone interested. Please contact me if you are interested in this. You can email me directly at kevin.talbot@gmail.com.
