Dramatic rescue from ridge high above Kaaawa

Flown to safety

Three hikers from Laie spent a couple of tense hours trapped on a ridge above Makaua Stream in Kaaawa on Tuesday afternoon before being plucked to safety by a Honolulu Fire Department rescue team. The HFD helicopter made three separate trips to the precarious spot high in the valley to complete the rescue.

Once on the ground, the hikers said they had been following a trail at the top of the ridge but apparently took a wrong turn. After finding themselves in a dangerous spot, they were able to call for help.

Firefighters from the Kaaawa station assisted the rescue unit.

They look like some mainland students from the university. This is not the first time we have mainlanders getting lost and Oahu’s taxpayers have to foot the bill.

I was away most of the day but my wife was tired of the sirens and helicopter noise. She said the firetruck was up our street many times.

I agree there are a lot of “numb nuts’ out there hiking but dcpinoy and his gang KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING.

I don’t think I would call them “numb nuts”. I’m sure they didn’t get stuck on purpose. Who would. Sometimes things just happen and you make a wrong turn and there’s no way out. Nobody is perfect so be a bit kinder. If it were you or someone you cared about you too would want them to take the safe way out.
