If I were just a little bit more of a believer in signs and omens, I would be taking cover and calling a kahuna to take appropriate defensive measures.
My day started with the remains of a small bird decorating the floor of my shower. Turn on the lights, there’s the mess. Poor bird. Ms. Annie, the likely perp, was asleep on a chair in the living room.
Not too unusual, really, in a house of cats that includes at least one relatively active hunter.
But that was just #1.
Then, on the beach, a dead manta ray, spread on the sand. Probably killed by a fisherman. An accident, most likely. Still very sad. This ray had a wingspan of probably 30-36 inches. I saw it from a distance and we avoided walking near it.
It’s always a joy to see a group of rays leisurely swimming near the shore. These creatures are wonderful to watch. Not so wonderful to see them dead on the beach.
After reaching the end of the beach, we turned around for the walk home. We decided to take the back roads and avoid the beach and the dead ray. But the bad day caught up with us again. Number three. As we passed the little corral at the end of Kekio Road where the Nozawa family keeps a few of their animals, another very sad scene. One of their miniature horses–a small black horse–was on the ground, apparently dead. A second horse stood a few feet away, waiting.
We called Jerome after getting home and left a message about the horse.
Then we had breakfast.
It’s raining now in Kaaawa. It seems appropriate. I’m still worried about the rest of the day.

you had your three — so you should be clear for the rest of the day — the rain is a good thing
I’m staying away from your neighborhood today, Ian.
We did the opposite. We didn’t go out today.
Can’t say I blame you. I hope you’ll give us an update on the horse, though, when and if you get one.
I blame you Ian ! (wait. fo wot?)
Great, the fake Hawaiian who tries to fit in to local culture by pretending to be illiterate is back making snarky comments about my posts! How I’ve missed him.
The dead horse concerns me. The white horse looks like she is a little on the thin side (not much, but getting there.) And the area doesn’t appear to have any grass or water. Are the animals getting enough to eat?
p.s. I’m just asking about the water/food situation because I’m just being curious (nosey? haha!) Of course, there may be water/food outside of the photographed area. 🙂 Being from Texas, we are sensitive to the needs of horses. (And this summer hasn’t exactly been kind to us. Sigh…)
hooohaaa. texans are the only ones who are sensitive to the needs of horses. jezusss!
No need for sarcasm. Brie is a longtime friend of this site, and one of Toby’s fans. So be nice!
Maybe this was an omen that Hannemann would run for the US House.
Case expressed so much concern during the gubernatorial election that Hannemann was “the most dangerous politician in a generation”.
If this is the case (no pun intended), then Case should drop out of the US Senate race and opt for the House race.
But then it’s all about ego and ambition to begin with for all these people — and not just Hannemann and Case. Even someone as nice as Hirono is really in it to be somebody with high status. All other reasons she and the others may make up to explain their aspirations are either secondary or fabricated.
BigBraddah …I know, reading back on what I typed, what I was trying to say didn’t come out right. LOL!!! I didn’t mean to infer that people in Hawaii don’t care about horses as much as Texans do. (I just tried to type out what I really meant when I mentioned “Texas” at all, but I give up. The more I type, the more confusing my sentiments get. haha!)
I had horses all my life until I went away to college, Brie. And I’m not from Texas.
Your comments weren’t offensive in the least — you were expressing concern for the animals. At no place in your post did you suggest that “only Texans” care about horses. Someone would have to be a complete dunderhead to even think that, let alone post it.
You have as much right to comment as anyone else (as long as Ian allows it, of course!). Please don’t let anyone intimidate you.
There are people across the world who are sensitive to the needs of all animals. My time riding horses, (western and bareback and sans reins) was the most rewarding. I groomed the animals, took care of the tack room, fed them the flakes of hay… learned to saddle and cinch in record time… love horses. and I nevah set foot in Tejas (orig spelling) yet. (Tho’ would love to)
Now I’m confused.
Suddenly the direction of the United States Senate in 2012 hinges on a House race in which Hannemann is a dark horse? Or a horse race in Kaaawa in which one of the participants isn’t even breathing, pending investigation?
This entire country is developing into, well, “Bridesmaids.” Re: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridesmaids_(2011_film)
Our kingdom, for a house in Texas!
