Poor Mr. Silverman. We were back at VCA for a check-up this week, and his remaining teeth are in bad shape. I guess diabetes can do bad things to your mouth, and in his case, it has. So I delivered him to VCA early this morning for dental surgery. No food after midnight. A half dose of insulin this morning. He’s in the good hands of Ann Sakamoto, our regular vet, who thinks he’ll feel better after extracting several more of his few remaining teeth. At age 14 or perhaps a little older, this kind of thing is a little risky. But you’ve got to trust your vet, and we do. She believes his quality of life will improve. But that doesn’t eliminate the anxiety, at least until she calls with a report on his condition.
Annie’s also in to get her teeth cleaned, which should clear up her gingivitis. She’s much younger and not diabetic, so I’m not too worried about her. Silverman is another story.
The other cats are doing okay.

Whenever I find myself becoming irritated over your opinions–which happens very seldom actually and is usually sparked by something you’ve written about Ed Case–I remind myself that you are the quintessential cat person and tranquility is restored. My cat is nearly 14 and recently had a couple of teeth removed at VCA Kaneohe. He returned in good shape and has learned to use his paw to block food from falling through the gap where one of his front fangs was.
In solidary. Kaniba, the last survivor of the four cats we brought to Hilo on August 1, 1996, is 17 years old now, and she is under the care of a fine veternarian. That vet and her staff give Kaniba excellent care and have trained us to provide extensive at-home care.
