Cat news: An update on Mr. Silverman

Here’s what Dr. Sakamoto said when she called me following the surgery:

“Silverman’s had his last dental.”

When I recounted the telephone call to a friend on the beach this morning, she looked stricken.

Seeing her face, I realized I needed to clarify.

Silverman is fine, or as fine as you can be after losing all the rest of your teeth.

She was relieved, thinking the “last dental” reference meant Silverman had died.

No way. Silverman is taking advantage of those nine lives. He had a good appetite last night, the day of the surgery, and again this morning. Eating is obviously strange, both because of the missing teeth and due to the stitches in his mouth. He has a funny smile now, especially since he’s getting a few drops of a narcotic pain reliever. Once the stitches start dissolving in another week or so, he should feel even better.

Dr. Sakamoto also removed a small lump from under his chin. After discussing the situation, we decided not to send it for testing to determine if it was cancer. The knowledge wouldn’t really have helped, since sending Silverman for kitty radiation treatment or chemotherapy wouldn’t make a lot of sense at his age and with his other health issues.

So we agreed to remove the lump and, with the dental surgery, improve the quality of his remaining life. If he’s lucky, that lump was benign. And Silverman’s always been a lucky cat! We hope for the best.

I am delighted that Silverman had a good outcome from his major dental action. Silverman of course will want to continue to have his share of nuggets/dry food, so I hope that you are prepared to prechew them for him. It takes a little getting use to, but you will get the hang of it.

Whew! For me, Silverman’s health problems far outweighed the problems of rail transit. I expect he will feel better long before the rail system does. Perhaps Romeo could visit him and sign an autograph.
