Duke & Silverman are joining forces to welcome you to yet another Feline Friday. Right at this moment, they are asleep on the little rug just inside the screen door out to the front deck, exactly as they were when this picture was taken a couple of days ago. I guess you could say this is one of their favorite spots!
The two diabetic boys are doing okay, but any hopes that we could beat their diabetes into remission have pretty much evaporated. Duke was diagnosed with this disease in mid-2010, Silverman by the end of the same year. It’s been twice daily insulin shots since then, spaced very 12 hours, or as close as I can get to that schedule. It pretty much rules out being able to attend evening events in town, or stay in town overnight. That’s sort of a drag, but you learn to live with it. It’s a cost of accepting the cats into our household, and in balance, we’re still the winners, I think.

Do cats get diabetes same reason as people… obesity related? I only have 2 cats & cat fur everywhere. How do you manage? & what do you do about fleas? I use that poison Frontline… hate to but it works.
Obesity and genes, I think. Duke is obese, but has always been big, and its proved very difficult to get his weight down. His mother and sister both died of feline diabetes. So I’m sure there’s something deeper going on there.
Silverman is not obese, never was.
Fur everywhere, no doubt. We manage with a good vacuum, and lower standards. I probably shouldn’t be so honest, but its true. Dog and cat people generally have to adjust, to some degree at least.
Fleas? We had worse flea problems when we had two all indoor cats, although I don’t know why. We don’t have carpets. That helps. I comb daily for fleas, which gives me sort of a flea census. When they show up, I use Revolution, a prescription flea spot that also goes after some other parasites. The cats don’t seem to mind it.
Thanks for asking.
They’re cute. Cats are a joy. I have adopted a total of three in my lifetime. One with feline leukemia. A shot every 12 hours or so can be challenging. I hope they are okay.
