Dogs of April: Part 1

Okay, it’s true. I don’t give the dogs their full share of screen time. My only excuse is that the cats get jealous, and it’s too dark in the early morning to get many dog photos during half the year or more.

Mr. BoogieBut now that the sun is rising earlier each day, it’s getting easier to turn the camera on the dogs we meet during our daily walks at dawn. There’s been some turnover, but no reduction in the number of canine friends.

I decided to break this next batch of dog pictures into two, figuring more people will actually look at the pictures if they’re presented in batches of 12 instead of one big gallery of 24.

So here goes, Part 1. The dogs are presented in the approximate order that we run into them along our route.

This is Mr. Boogie. He lives just around the corner from us. He used to be left out to unattended to sleep in the road and greet people passing by. Unfortunately, although he is a sweet dog, he is big. And he can scare people. And, on several occasions, he got picked up by the Humane Society for being out and about the neighborhood. So now he’s almost always properly restrained in his own yard. But, now and again, he’s out to greet us. Somehow Boogie is the only dog that manages to beg more than one large Kirkland biscuit. He’s that good a beggar. Really.

“Mr. Boogie … is big. And he can scare people. … Somehow Boogie is the only dog that manages to beg more than one large Kirkland biscuit.” Yes. Big scary dogs get more biscuits. There’s a lesson there. Think international diplomacy, and also Hawaii politics. As Machiavelli said, it’s better to be feared than loved.
