You know summer is really here when people start showing up on the beach in Kaaawa before dawn in search of the little silvery o‘ama, prized on their own and also popular as live bait. This photo was taken earlier this morning near Kaaawa Beach Park.

The other interesting thing this week has been the influx of large Portuguese man o’ war washed up onto the sand. A lot of these have been unusually large, at least much larger than we typically see here in Kaaawa. Here’s an example. It’s very beautiful, but you don’t want to get tangled up with one in the water.
