I just received an email with the sad news that we’ve lost another of our long-time morning dogs.
Her person wrote:
We just wanted to let Maile’s friends know that she passed away peacefully this morning.
She was a fun, loyal and loving friend all these years and will be greatly missed. Happy trails Maile.
Maile lived a very, very long life. She had been rescued, and was totally loyal to her person. Even my very popular dog biscuits could break through her reserve. I had to earn her acceptance every time we met. And how I enjoyed seeing her in the distance on the beach, where she would eventually be let loose to race the rest of the way, sit down in front of me, and wait for her treat.
She hasn’t been up to running in a while.
So here’s to memories of Ms. Maile.
She’s the brown part-pit, in a photo taken back in 2006. She used to be pals with Mr. Axel, seen here with her on the beach in Kaaawa. Axel, a big black Lab who was a retired service dog, died back in 2008.

It is sad that cats and dogs have so much shorter life spans than humans. That puts us in a position of having to say many goodbyes to our canine and feline companions.
Good girl, Maile.
