Giving credit to Gov. Abercrombie for pushing marriage equality issue

I saw a comment on the House passage of the marriage equality bill saying Gov. Neil Abercrombie is now a lame-duck because of his position on this issue. Meaning, I suppose, that at least some of those opponents of the bill think they have the votes to block his reelection.

But I want to thank the governor for pushing the issue to the forefront and not wavering in his personal and political support. If Hawaii makes history and becomes the next state to provide for same sex marriages, Neil Abercrombie deserves to share in the credit.

I’ve been surprised and sometimes disappointed in some of Neil’s policy positions since becoming governor, but this is one of the issues that makes me proud that we put him in the state’s highest office.

Thanks, Neil, and to members of the House and Senate who stood up to the conservative chorus and moved our state closer to full equality.

I think we have seen in past elections here that the social conservatives overestimate their strength at the polls.

I would, however, love to see Richard Fale (R) and Ken Ito (D) removed from the state legislature. They are the two Windward reps who voted against marriage equality.

@Windward Pua: Yes, and I suspect that an extra reason for Hawai‘i Reserves’ wanting to build the new town north of La‘ie is to produce just the result you describe, and a permanent Republican majority in Ko‘olauloa.

I fear both Pua and Flatlander above are correct. HRI wants more, more, more… and not for the local people, in my opinion. Utah West here we come!
