OIP finds OHA violated Sunshine Law

I’ve got a very early appointment this morning, so won’t have time for a decent post.

But I want to credit Henry Curtis for getting the scoop on a new OIP opinion.

Henry’s Ililani Media reported that OIP determined the Office of Hawaiian Affairs violated the state’s sunshine law when trustees rescinded a letter sent to U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry by OHA’s CEO, Dr. Kamana`opono Crabbe.

According to Curtis, OIP found that the decision to retract Crabbe’s letter was made outside of any public meeting.

The Trustees’ decision to jointly sign the Rescission Letter was not discussed during a noticed meeting of any sort, but instead was reached through a chain of serial communications involving the board’s full membership. The Sunshine Law did not allow the OHA Board to use serial communications to discuss and reach agreement on the Rescission Letter outside a noticed meeting.”

There’s more to the OIP ruling. You can read the Ililani Media report here. The opinion letter has not yet been posted on the OIP website.
