Throwback Thursday: Ready for church c. 1955

The slide was damaged, with gunk stuck on it that left scars.

But the basics are clear. It’s my sister, Bonnie, and me ready for church one morning. I’m guessing around 1955 or so. We’re out in front of the old Kahala house we grew up in, and where my parents spent 70+ years of their lives.

My parents didn’t go to church. But my mother believed that we should get the basics and make the decision about religion for ourselves. So she drove us out to Holy Nativity Episcopal Church in Aina Haina, and picked us up when services were over. I dutifully got dressed up, went through the motions, met up with Aina Haina kids as well as a few friends from Kahala who attended the same church.

As a result of that grounding, my sister has stayed an active church goer throughout her life, and remains so today. I bring up the other end of the spectrum. Enough said.

    Hi Ian,

If you’re ever interested on fixing up a photograph like this that you digitize, a neat place to get it done (usually for free) is on DPReview’s Retouching forum. Some of the folks there do amazing work.
