Throwback Thursday: Off to school

My mother’s careful note written in the album when she added this photo recorded the date–May 29, 1953. I was three months short of 6 years old.

I appear to be ready for school, lunch box in one hand, and the other hand holds a flat package by the string tied around it.

I’m standing in the driveway of our house in Kahala. You can see by the shadows that there were still coconut trees at the either side of the driveway, just out of view. My feet don’t show, but I would have been barefoot. Shoes weren’t part of school life in Hawaii for most of us until 7th grade.

I wish that I could recall whether this day had any special significance, but I don’t.

Heading for school

Do you remember what kind of lunch box you had? I can’t read the front.Mine was a Hopalong Cassidy

Had a nephew visit recently (from Singapore) and he said one of the things he remembers the most from being around me and our boys years ago was that they went to school barefoot. He was very jealous.
