Throwback Thursday: A Big Island picnic?

This morning’s death in the family disrupted our day, but I thought that I would post this Throwback Thursday photo while it’s still Thursday, at least in Hawaii and on the West Coast.

Shortly after Meda and I were married and moved back to Hawaii for graduate school, my mother took us on a neighbor island tour. I’m guessing it was in early 1970, although it probably could have been late in 1969.

I recall that we visited parts of Maui and the Big Island, seeing places that were important to her, and meeting her old friends and distant cousins.

Is this beach in Hawaii County? Anybody recognize it?

In any case, there we are, Meda, my mom, and I. Oh, I’m the one with the beard. And those great, huge black plastic frames. That was my first pair of glasses, which I found I needed during my senior year of college.

It definitely looks like the north side of Kaimu Bay, which was known as “Left Point.” If so, this entire area is now buried under lava.
