No, not one of the famous Dukes. Just Mr. Duke, our 13-year old diabetic tabby point siamese cat.
He’s back home after spending two nights at VCA in Kaneohe. He’s starting to stabilize after Saturday morning’s bout of hypoglycemia. He’s very happy to be out of the hospital and back here at home.
We don’t really know what caused his blood sugar level to crash. It turns out that he had a bladder infection, but it isn’t likely that could throw him so out of kilter. All the cats have reacted to the hot weather by eating a little less, and that could potentially have played a key role.
His blood glucose level was down in dangerous territory, under 40 at one point when at VCA. His insulin dose has been cut in half. This after several years where nothing seemed to change, which may have caused me to be too complacent and not alert enough to subtle changes in his behavior.
I have to be sure that he eats (no appetite and I skip that insulin shot). As long as he’s eating, I have to adjust the insulin dose depending on his blood glucose level.
Hopefully it won’t take long to get to just the right amount of insulin and he will be back on track.
Good boy, Duke!

Very glad to know that Duke is OK- Cats are so sensitive to the most subtle changes in their lives- moving house is a HUGE event! I suggest large quantities of cat nip ad libitum.
