Okay, we’re somewhere at the end of Week 3 after the big move, and the cats are still in the process of recovering. Romeo was up at about 4 a.m., biting my hand and reaching his paw out to tap my face, with the “wake up, it’s time to eat” message. I shut him out of the bedroom for a while, but then Duke took over, purring loudly from a position inches from my face. Eventually I gave up, got up, and filled their dishes, which made for lots of feline happiness.
The good news is that they all are coming out to the kitchen to eat. No more breakfast behind the bed. And they have quickly learned where the litter boxes are to be found. We started with them all immediately visible, and have slowly spread them into different parts of the house. Right now, five cats, five litter boxes. That’s actually at least one short of ideal, but good enough for now. It’s very hard to find five inconspicuous places for litter boxes, and those going on the wood floors need to be on a litter mat to provide some protection for the finish.
The not so good news is that all the cats are still exceedingly wary, nervous, and tend to make themselves scarce, at least in daylight hours.
I’ve discovered that Romeo still spends most of the day in the back corner of our closet, behind some hanging clothes. I coaxed him out after we got back from our walk this morning, and got this photo as he rather sleepily tried to decide if it was safe to be out.
But they are adapting and slowly getting more comfortable. It’s just taking a long time. Romeo and Annie, the two that have spent the most time outdoors in Kaaawa, are the only cats to pay much attention at all to the world outside their windows, but even they haven’t been fixated on outside. Just a little curious about what’s out there.
I suppose we should just say, “so far, so good.”

Thanks for the updates on your precious ones. Sounds like they are adjusting to the new house at their own pace. They’ll all eventually get there, because the two most important figures in their lives are still around. By the way, the house looks beautiful.
Nice to see the kitties in all their glory and on different floors! They seem to be settling in now!
