Our routine has changed in one respect now that we’ve moved to Kahala. We still walk to the beach every morning at dawn, but I no longer carry the bag of dog biscuits as I formerly did in Kaaawa. And we’re in the process of getting to know a whole new cast of morning dogs without benefit of tasty snacks. It’s a slower and trickier process, but we’re managing!
Introducing Marlowe, one of the first dogs we met, and as you can see he’s quite a happy dog. But he’s also painfully shy. Actually, he’s a classic example of “approach-avoidance conflict.” He wants to be friendly, runs happily towards us, and then chickens out at the last minute. If he’s paying attention to another dog, I’ve been able to sneak up quietly and give him a good scratching, which he obviously enjoys and accepts. Then he goes back to staying a few safe feet away.
Most of the dogs we meet have been on the beach, with only a few met while walking the interior streets of Kahala. And all the walls have meant that we haven’t met any dogs as we walk past their yards. That’s very different from Kaaawa.
