Here we go again into the vast time machine that feeds Throwback Thursday.
Yes, that’s me with the lawn mower in the back yard. I look like I’m dressed to have my picture taken, rather than to really be working in the yard.
As I recall, my dad kept that mower running until it was probably a true antique. There were other mowers after this one, but this one was burned into my kid memory.
At that time, the mango trees were relatively small and the grass had no trouble spreading under and around them. More grass to mow.
Now, a lifetime later, they are much larger and fuller, and it’s hard for grass to get enough light to thrive under there. Yes, we trimmed them back at the beginning of 2014, and are scheduled to do it again in mid-January, but I don’t know if that will make a substantial difference.

Looks to me as though you are bare-footed. Probably not a good idea when using a motorized mower (just ask Fred Hemmings).
I thought of that when I found that photo….
Not to mention having something to protect the eyes.
Growing up, my old man saddled me with that chore. It was good exercise, I guess. But these days, I wouldn’t make my own kids use a mower or a weed whacker. Not worth the risk of hurting themselves or people walking nearby. I let the yard service pros handle that and find other ways to teach my kids the value of hard work.
Good grief, how many people with lawns did not have that mower. I did, and I looked just like Ian.
