It’s the season, so Mr. Toby welcomes you to another Feline Friday while showing off this festive necktie. But, as you can probably tell, he’s not too keen on the experience. On the other hand, he was the only cat to at least wait on the inevitable freak-out until I got a picture. I also tried it on Annie and Romeo, but they were considerably less cooperative.
So it’s that time of year. Friends are putting up their Christmas trees. We have always had cats, and that means we haven’t ever tried a tree. It just seems like it would be far too tempting a play area, and would subject our cats to unfair levels of temptation and lead to inevitable transgressions. It’s possible that our geriatric cats have aged out of the terror and destruction stage, but you just never know. And we’ve never conducted an empirical test.
Over the years, people have given us very thoughtful gifts of cat-themed ornaments. Sans tree, Meda finds creative places to display them, and sometimes even hang them. And so it is this year.
In any case, it’s been a relatively uneventful week among the feline pride. Romeo is in my lap as I type this, with Toby on the table just to my left, looking like a table ornament. Duke’s getting ready for a nap on his favorite floor mat, Annie’s already curled up on a living room chair, and Kili wandered off to the bedroom.
Our biggest cat issue right now is that our main vet, Dr. Ann Sakamoto, is in the process of leaving VCA in Kaneohe, and joining a small practice in Hawaii Kai, nearer to her home and her elderly mom. The transition will take a while, but it’s coming.
We’re not sure what we are going to do. Stay with VCA or follow her to Hawaii Kai? And maybe it doesn’t have to be either/or.
We moved to VCA years ago when Doug Hooks decided to close his practice in what was then the Temple Valley Shopping Center and join VCA. As a large veterinary hospital, is has long hours, lots of high tech capacity, good doctors, and someone is always available in an emergency. It’s in Kaneohe, but in terms of driving time, it’s about the same from Kaaawa as from Kahala.
As a friend observed recently, that’s a very First World problem, isn’t it?

Actually Mr. Toby looks quite distinguished.
I am one number off from VCA, so half my calls are for them. If Dr. Sakamoto is the same doctor who once treated my Julio, she’s awesome. I needed to move on though because I, like so many, found VCA too expensive. I bet you stick with Dr. Sakamoto, and be thankful her mom doesn’t live in Haleiwa.
VCA is very expensive…enough said about that, but I sure would stick with the Doc who took the best care of my cats. I now have a vet in NH who has BARELY any bells and whistles but I wouldn’t trade her for the world. If necessary she sends tests out or even has sent others to specialists if necessary. Everyday care is better with a vet the cats know. It’s scary enough as it is!
