Around Hilo Bay

Afternoon on the bay When we’re in Hilo, we enjoy the views of the bay, with the city and Mauna Kea on display across on the other side. We walked a bit late Friday afternoon, and again early Saturday morning before Meda started her long day of conferencing.

I thought I would share a few photos while trying to keep track of today’s election returns and commentary.

By the way, we’re flying back to Honolulu on Sunday, I’ve got an early meeting while MEda’s conference is wrapping up, and I’m not sure if I’ll have a chance to blog. We’ll see.

When cruising Hilo Bay spin by Banyan Dive (uhh, Drive) and see how well DLNR is managing our public lands. With tourism our states primary driver it’s an indictment of both statute and administration of same. Hilo’s Resort zoned property is 90% on public lands and controlled by HRS171-36. Say what you will about the weather affecting Hilos tourism but don’t underestimate the effects of bad tenure. The facilities have been terrible and tourists have lots of better options elsewhere. So Hilo is a day trip.
The Lege has passed special legislation twice in belated attempts to assist specific hotels (Naniloa and Hilo Hawaiian) while leaving the other leases to rot. At this point the County has stepped in, dusting off the old HRA powers conferred post tsunami. Hopefully the Mayor will be able to get something done similarly to what he accomplished with Mauna Kea State Park.
An argument can be made as to which was the larger disaster to strike Hilo; the killer wave or bad statutory language and beauracratic incompetence.
