I ran into this photo while digging in a coupe of boxes looking for potential Throwback photos.
I’m guessing this was taken around 1970.
Is that high-rise the Contessa condominium, near where the end of King Street hits Kapiolani?
Or perhaps one of those condos near Kapiolani and Date?
And what vantage point is the photo taken from?
But I’m sure I took the photo, and the 1970 time frame seems about right.
What’s your guess on the location and time frame?

Contessa from the Pan-Am Building, with a long lens? I don’t know.
When the (enlarged) photo popped up on my screen my immediate thought was that the building in the foreground is/was a UH dorm or other UH building . . .but then I’m having trouble identifying the streets/traffic pattern. Graffiti on the construction wall might give some clues, but difficult to read.
OK, I’m thinking the roadway in the foreground is East-West Road and the street fronting the UH building is Dole Street. So – photo taken from the EWC admin building (is it called Jefferson? Imin Ctr?)
If that’s the case, then this must be the College of Engineering (Holes?) under construction).
That’s definitely the Contessa under construction in the background and what looks to be Johnson Hall and Dole Street in the foreground. I would guess you took the photo from either Sakamaki or Holmes Hall- though Holmes wasn’t completed until mid-1972.
Play with this 3-D view on Google Maps (hold down the CTRL key while dragging the map to change perspective): https://www.google.com/maps/@21.2991153,-157.814554,63a,20y,204.19h,82.48t/data=!3m1!1e3
I think the street lights are a good clue as well as the tall Norfolk Pine on the right. I’ll keep twisting my head around and enlarging the foto till it blurs.
The white Toyota Corona on the left is going up East West Road.
The VW Bug in front of J Hall is on Dole St.
Construction in the foreground is Holmes Hall.
I’m guessing it’s taken from EWC.
I think this is the correct answer.
As posted at 9:14 am (altho’ I misspelled Holmes).
Oh! Agreed. Maybe from Hale Manoa.
Definitely Johnson Hall windows – see http://bloximages.newyork1.vip.townnews.com/kaleo.org/content/tncms/assets/v3/editorial/0/04/004ac454-ac93-11e2-ab0d-0019bb30f31a/517758317a270.image.jpg
Thanks for helping figure out this photo!
It would likely have been taken from Hale Manoa. In 1970, I was working as a student photographer for the public affairs office at the EWC. I roamed around taking all sorts of pictures.
Yup, Holmes Hall under construction.
