A View of Honolulu in 1958

April 1958. A year before Hawaii became a state. My mother took this photo from up on Tantalus, looking towards Diamond Head. Oh, how it has changed!

Click to see a larger version. The Royal Hawaiian was still a Waikiki landmark visible from afar. The old Honolulu Stadium is in the center-right of the photo. The high-rise apartments in Makiki were still years away.

Why do I always want to turn back time. Remember when our parents could parallel park at Waikiki Beach and let us run wild?

I remember about then sitting on a surfboard off Waikiki grumbling about the low “high-rises” of that era like the Biltmore obscuring the view of onshore valleys back then. Little did I know.

Our city has no plan for where we are going so get ready for more development on steep mountains, ag lands and wetlands. That is the current trend.

Ian’s mother’s photo reminds me that (gasp) cities change!

Both the city and state have plans for the future Honolulu and it involves some (oh, the HORROR) tall housing in developed areas NOT on steep mountains or existing wetlands.

My parents lived through this era and really there was good AND bad about life in a lower density Honolulu with less people.

Thank you for sharing that Picture. How I wish we could experience that again. Our island life has become more of city life here in Honolulu.

Look forward to seeing more photos here on your blog
