Early morning in Laie

It was hard not to feel a little guilty as we enjoyed dinner and an overnight stay in a home on the beach in Laie this week, while seeing the constant flow of news reports about the current eruption on the Big Island as it claims dozens of homes and threatens many more, all while flood recovery is still underway on Kauai.

But I have to say that waking up early and walking the beach in Laie was fantastic. Here’s a taste. Just click to see all the photos from that morning.

Today’s New York Times has an excellent overview of the volcanic activity on Kilauea–current and impending. It’s well written and includes good photographs and very helpful graphics. It gives some attention to the history of Leilani Estates:

“The construction of Leilani Estates was approved in 1960, according to Daryn Arai, deputy planning director at the Hawaii County Planning Department, and about 1,600 people live in the neighborhood today…Despite the neighborhood’s position in an area where lava flows are most likely to occur on the island, there are no building restrictions, Mr. Arai said.”

I have always wondered what the proper name of that beach in Laie is called. I have heard Clissolds, Bikini Beach… Then further down is Bathtub beach which then wraps into Pounders.
