My dad took these photos of the Kauai Surf Hotel in August 1962, just a couple of years after the hotel opened.
They give a bit of the flavor of Kauai at the time.
These slides turned up in a box with a lot of other photos taken by my mother in the 1950’s and early 1960’s.

The designer of the Kauai Surf didn’t think that mosquitos would fly above a certain height so many of the rooms lacked screens. The mosquitos were, of course, more than capable of ascending to whatever blood-sucking level they wanted. Consequently, arriving guests were handed insecticide along with their keys.
