Throwback Thursday: With my parents in 2002

It was August 2002. We were waiting outside what was then known as the Honolulu Academy of Arts, now the Honolulu Museum of Art, before going in for lunch.

My parents were both 88. At this time, they were both active, had all their mental faculties, and I thought they might live forever. My dad turned 89 a few months later, in December 2002. He had a good six years to go before dementia and physical issues led him to be hospitalized, then moved to a nursing facility. He died in late 2010. My mom died at 98 at the beginning of 2013.

This is one of the best photos I have of us during that time of their lives. One of my favorites.

At that time, he was still taking his boat out on overnight fishing trips, aided by a younger crew. I think he went fishing for the last time when he was 95.
