Throwback Thursday on Wednesday: More on Goliath

Two weeks ago, my Throwback Thursday post featured our last day with Goliath, my mother’s Austin. At that time, I vowed to search for several additional photos that I recalled seeing.

Well, here they are. Three more photos as we said goodbye to Goliath.

The color isn’t quite accurate. I recall that Goliath was a deep, deep green, almost black. That doesn’t really come through in these pictures.

And I also found a note that establishes the date–September 16, 1960. The calendar shows that was a Friday, and the shadows show it was late in the afternoon. I had just started the 8th grade at University High School in Manoa, where Bonnie was starting her senior year.

First photo. Bonnie sliding down from her perch on Goliath’s front fender.

Second photo. Bonnie and I posing alongside Goliath. The coconut tree just behind us was removed not long afterwards, if I recall correctly. The yard used to have several coconut trees, but regular trimming was getting too expensive and my mother decided they needed to go.

Final photo. Goliath, Bonnie and my mother. My mom certainly does look a bit wistful. Is that a cigarette in her hand? She had been a smoker, but later would only sneak an occasional smoke when she thought no one would notice. We noticed only because there were strategically placed matchbooks scattered around the house.

Goliath’s Last Day. Sept 16, 1960.

Patty – oh yes they were. I even remember one holomu`u I had – made out of deep green corduroy I wore a lot and climbed the banyan tree at the diamond head end of Kalakalua one fun evening!

Ian, I think your Mom was thinking about all the wonderful times in that car.
