It was Thanksgiving Day in November 2007.
Meda and I cooked a turkey and all the fixings. My sister, Bonnie, drove our parents out to our house in Kaaawa for a mid-day meal. My dad would turn 94 in a couple of weeks, and my mom was 93, but both seemed to be in relatively good health and very good spirits. It turned out to be the last Thanksgiving where we would all be together.
At the time, it felt like a hassle to clean the house ahead of my mother’s inspection tour, plan and cook the meal, and prepare for their arrival. In retrospect, it was a moment to treasure.

This sparks a memory even farther back, to the 1970s and your Dad: when you learned I was moving to the Big Island in 1978, you suggested that perhaps I could become your Dad’s representative there. I’ve often regretted not taking you up on that suggestion, as it would have probably been a much easier livelihood than construction, with its ups and downs and physical hardships / dangers. Thanks for the photo from 2007, seems like a long time ago but it’s a mere 11 years.
