We’re out of town, and the cats are in the care of a very good cat sitter. But I left home prepared in advance for this Feline Friday. So the show goes on.
Perhaps it’s time to reintroduce the stars of this weekly peek behind the scenes of our feline household.
Duke is a big Tabby Point Siamese. His mother was one of several cats we helped to rescue from the home of a deceased cat hoarder in early 2002. We adopted her, and later discovered she was pregnant. This coming Tuesday, April 30, will be Duke’s 17th birthday. He was diagnosed with feline diabetes in 2010, and has been getting twice daily insulin injections since that time.
Ms. Annie was a kitten when we rescued her from the beach in Kaaawa in 2003. She apparently had wandered into a drainage pipe that ran under Kamehameha Highway. Then, after emerging onto the beach, was trying to scramble up the sandy slope to the road. Then we came by on our daily walk at dawn, heard her loud kitten cries, scooped her up and took her home.
And Romeo, the handsome gray tiger, appeared around our house on New Years Day in 2005. Apparently he took refuge under the house during the loud fireworks of the previous night. He was dirty and smelly, and stayed at a safe distance. But he was obviously hungry. So we trapped him, had him snipped, got him a round of medication, and then let him loose in our yard, part of the trap-neuter-release agreement we had entered into with the group that loaned us the cat trap. Romeo took a tour of the yard, then returned to the house for something to eat. He’s been with us ever since.
All three have been 100% indoor cats since we moved to Kahala almost four years ago.

Ian: I can only access one photo, seems to be Romeo.
My daughter adopted a stray kitten who wandered into her boy friend’s yard by following the boyfriend’s cat. Kiki is a part Bengal, now almost fully grown and lives with us. We used to let him out for an hour or so, but he got bitten by another cat so now is kept inside. Thinking of getting another kitten as a companion.
