Day 1 in Surfers Paradise

We left Honolulu early Friday afternoon, arrived in Brisbane Saturday evening, and then were driven about an hour south to Surfers Paradise, an apartment/resort area on the Gold Coast. Our internal clocks are pretty messed up after a short night. We have today (Sunday in Australia) to get oriented, then tomorrow Meda kicks off the conference with her keynote address. Click below for more info on the conference.

It’s four hours earlier here than in Honolulu, but a day later. I’ve already checked in with the cats via our home security cams, caught up with the Hawaii and US news. Last night the late local news here was full of footy (Australian rules football) and cricket. There’s a bit of a learning curve for visitors trying to watch the action.

This morning’s breakfast spread here in the Crowne Plaza hotel was really quite good.

I posted several photos on Facebook. Here’s a sample. One thing of note—the eggs were much tastier than we’re used to at home.

have a good trip it’s a great country. On the food end try the “bugs” aka slipper lobster, Pauls pourable custard (it comes in a pint carton at the stores) which is heaven on a fruit salad. Also the Aussies really do so much more with passion fruit than we do in Hawaii. Also jaffles (a type of sandwich) are wonderful, so is having afternoon tea. Cadbury has a rum raisin chocolate bar that they don’t sell in the States so check that out it’s really good. Of, course a takeaway roasted chook always hits the spot! If you only do one my foodie suggestions Paul’s custard would be the one. Sorry, your entry said Australia and food it triggered a lot of old memories for me! ps Bundaberg Rum use to have a rum flavored tea makes a nice gift.
