Whew. About a month spent mostly alone in our house. I’m ready to climb a cat tree just to be doing something different. But today is Feline Friday! Time to share the latest on our feline family.
We had another somewhat scary moment. We made a short visit yesterday to Times Supermarket around 11 a.m. Apart from the still missing paper products, we found just about everything on our shopping list.
When we got home, we immediately noticed that Duke was staggering toward the kitchen, but not making much progress, almost passing out on his feet. I immediately got out my glucose test kit, poked his ear to get a little drop of blood for testing. Sure enough, his glucose level was less than half the normal value. I’m pretty sure that’s dangerously low. So I held Duke in place while Meda got out some sugary supplies, a little bit of Nutrical, a high calorie supplement that’s full of sugar, and then a smear of honey. I put those on the tip of my finger, then scraped it all into Duke’s mouth, making sure that he got it all. Within a short time, maybe as little as 10-12 minutes, he was no longer acting like he was falling down drunk. At that point, I switched to offering him small amounts of cat food, all aimed at getting his glucose level back up.
It’s really all a balancing act. Duke has feline diabetes, resulting in very high glucose levels. Most of the time our struggle is to inject him with the right amount of insulin to bring that glucose level down into a safe range. But then, every once in a while, his glucose crashes. Too low, and it’s potentially fatal.
Within an hour, and Duke was pretty much his normal self. Another close call.
In any case, here come the cats! Just click below for the week’s photos.
