Throwback Thursday: Waialae Nui in 1957

Here are two photos of Waialae Nui ridge in or around 1957, one taken looking up toward the mountains, the other looking down on Kahala from up the hill.

The top photo is taken from a spot along Pueo Street in Kahala, looking towards the mountains. The overgrown area along the street is now Kahala Community Park, adjacent to Kahala School. At that time, it was a large undeveloped lot, covered with boulders that must have been cleared from the surrounding area when residential lots were being developed.

Looking up to the mountains, you see the first phase of homes built on both sides of the street along the lowest portion of Halekoa Drive, before the first sharp turn going up. The road extended a little further, but only to the water tank across from what is now Uhi Place. When I was a cub scout, my dad would drive us up to the water tank and we would then hike up the ridge from there.

The bottom photo was taken from the parking area by the water tank up Halekoa Drive in May 1957 when my dad took several of us from my cub scout group on a hike up Waialae Nui.

If you click to see the larger and more detailed version, you can see parts of Kahala and Kaimuki spread out in the distance below, with Diamond Head looming in the background.
