Feline Friday: Two weeks into this great adventure

That title should have been “Feline Friday on Saturday,” but I wanted to signal that this time the delay wasn’t my fault. I was prepared to post Feline Friday yesterday, right on schedule, and then Flickr.com, which I use to host these photo galleries, decided to go “down” and become unavailable at a rather inopportune moment.

So you’re getting your look behind the scenes a day late, due to circumstances beyond my control.

As of this past Thursday at noon, our new cat had been with us for two weeks. One week hiding, the second week slowly emerging.

A week ago, I worried that we might have made a huge mistake and that this cat was going to hide under the futon in our spare room for her entire life, coming out only under cover of darkness.

So I did the normal thing. I turned to the internet web for advice, and learned that two weeks is the average time needed for a cat to get accustomed to new surroundings. And, lo and behold, she did just that during her second week, with measurable progress every day.

Here’s my recap of the week.

Friday, October 2. About 6 p.m. The-Cat-Initially-Known-as-Cali met Romeo nose-to-nose for the first (and still the only) time.

Overnight, October 3-4. Another first. The-Cat-Initially-Known-as-Cali spent most of the night sleeping on top of the futon instead of in her safe spot on a towel underneath it. Captured on video by security cam.

Sunday, October 4. I left the door to Kali’s room open and Romeo wandered in, ate her food, then sat down to watch her. She watched back. No claws appeared, but they remained at a safe distance. After Romeo left the room, Kali stayed to get pets.

Monday, October 5. Just before 2 a.m. I heard the sounds of a cat playing. It was down the hall where The-Cat-Initially-Known-as-Cali had her own safe room. I decided it was time. So I closed Romeo in our bedroom, and let Cali out to explore the rest of the house. I then went back to bed, where Meda and Romeo were still asleep.

Later Monday morning, Romeo and The-Cat-Initially-Known-as-Cali did their version of Upstairs Downstairs, Romeo on top of the futon while Cali sat underneath.

Wednesday, October 7. The-Cat-Initially-Known-as-Cali has her first visit to our regular vet. The upshot—she needs more dental work. And our vet estimates she’s somewhere around three years old. The cat, that is, not the vet.

And we decide that her name will sound the same, but will be the Hawaiian version, Kaliko, Kali for short. So The-Cat-Initially-Known-as-Cali is now officially Kali.

Afternoon of the 7th. Another relatively close encounter with Romeo. This one ends with hissing and bared claws when Romeo decided he wanted to be on the futon as well, and herself thought that would be inappropriate at best. The hissing and claw display was from the little miss.

Friday morning, October 9. She’s gotten to roam the house every night this week. She is now much more comfortable as she does her rounds of the house. I believe that she also dipped into Romeo’s food dish, which involved jumping up onto the dining table where I had put it for safe keeping.

So there you go! Kali has had the run of the house for several hours every night this week. She has successfully launched onto the kitchen counter, our dining table, has been on, under, and around all the furniture, and hasn’t broken a thing yet!

Now we just have to continue her slow introduction to Romeo. He’s curious, she’s wary. We’re going slow.
