Connecting the dots between a Christmas shooting and the disappearance of Johnny Fraser

My latest story about what prosecutors have called the Miske Enterprise, the criminal organization that allegedly operated under the cover of the businesses owned by Honolulu businessman Mike Miske, appears today at Civil Beat.

It’s pretty dense, with lots of references to different documents, and took me several weeks to write and edit. I had hoped to publish it before Christmas, but that didn’t work out. Along the way, I had to admit there was just too much information to cram into one story, so this is really conceived as Part 1 of a 2 part series. But Part 2 hasn’t been written yet, so they’ll be a bit of a delay.

I started out with the fact that two of the men charged along with Miske in the 22-count federal indictment had also charged and convicted for their parts in the Christmas 2016 murder at Ala Moana Center, which made headlines at the time. That led me back to the voluminous record from the Christmas case, from police reports to trial transcripts, to try to understand whether and how it was tied to the broader Miske criminal organization alleged by federal prosecutors. This story tries to put it in context. I hope that I succeeded, but you’ll be the judge of that.
