Feline Friday: Early morning play

Tomorrow it will have been four weeks since I brought Kinikini home from Aiea. And what a week it has been! It was the week Kini and Kali began playing every morning before dawn. Tennis ball soccer (who knew that tennis balls would be such multidimensional toys), hide and seek, tag, and combinations that seem to flow naturally as Kali and Kinikini roar around the house, first just loud thumps in the dark until I turn on enough of the lights to see what was making all the noise, and to get some photos.

Well, let me amend that description a bit. Kinikini roars around the house, while Kali follows, moving from one safe spot under a chair or stool to another, occasional jumping out to “tag” Kini with a swat in his direction, or to claim some time with one of the balls in play (I think there are three being chased around this morning).

It was the week we could finally leave the house and be confident the cats would be fine together. It was the week Kinikini visited us in bed for the first time in the night. It was the week all three cats were shut in a small room together for several hours without incident. It was, in short, the week Kinikini became a full fledged cat of this house.

One thing about Kinikini. He is definitely nocturnal. It isn’t just that he is more active at night. It’s that he is only active at night. It’s like he has inherited some fragment of vampire DNA. He owns the night, especially the 90 minutes or so between 4 and 5:30 a.m. But as dawn approaches, he will quietly disappear, retreating to spot on the floor under the futon in his “safe” room for a long nap. He gets up to use the litter pan sometime after noon, then heads back under for an afternoon nap. He seems to emerge sometime after 5 p.m. for a tentative look around the house, but won’t really be out and about until the sun goes down. Even if I leave a bowl of food out for him in the day, he barely touches it. Eating, it seems, is something that happens in the early evening and very early morning, and certainly not during daylight hours.

I wonder if this will change as he gets more accustomed to his new life?

In any case, speaking of play…check out the photos! I hope they convey how excited the cats have been!

Kini is such a handsome and playful lad! The house must have a totally different, energetic vibe now! Romeo is probably just watching the action and shaking his head thinking “crazy kids”.

I love how the stools in your house seem to have some kind of protective cloaking ability and force field for little Kali to hide in 😉

What a fun crew they are with Kinikini adding the spark! I really love the use of the stools for Kali safety too;) They are pretty hilarious batting away at the tennis ball and playfully at one another.
