Another interisland view

Fabulous view at dawn again this morning, with the peaks of several islands visible above the horizon from Waialae Beach Park.

Once again, I believe we’re seeing Molokai on the left, Maui and Haleakala in the center, and the highest point of Lanai on the right.

Your initial “interisland view” post started a row within my friends. Can one see the Big Island from Oahu? Is it technically possible given the distance and curvature of the earth, etc? Some say they have seen it. Other’s say impossible.

I spent a night in a cliffside cave at Oahu’s Makapuu Point a long time ago and sketched roughly what I could see at the clear dawn. When I got home to Makiki I got out the maps and calculated what was what based on distance, angle, and elevation. Surprise: the same islands Ian sees from Waialae Beach Park, plus a lot of birds. Lanai more distinct because closer there. No sign of the Big Island. According to the numbers the Big Island peaks were well beyond the horizon.
Some guy on the web, though, says Mauna Loa should theoretically be visible on a very clear day from Koko Crater or from high points along the Koolau crest all the way to Konahuanui! Might be right. Someone else posts pictures of Lanai on the horizon and says it’s the Big Island.
