Welcoming the first dawn of the new year

Happy New Year!

Yes, it’s 2023. Starting another year, although not really a clean slate to begin with.

As we greet each new year, I remember vividly a brief conversation with my dad on his birthday, December 7, 2009. We brought a birthday cake to the nursing home where he had been living for a year.

When I told him it was his birthday, he wanted to know what year it was.

“Nineteen…nineteen…” He paused, looking at me to fill in the blank, tell him what year it is. I had to say that it’s 2009.

“So how old am I? Eighty?”

96, I answered.

He looked bemused. 96 is something that happens to someone else, to old people.

That sums it up, I think. We’ll all surprised now and then by how long we’ve managed to survive. The new year is always a reminder.

But it was a beautiful dawn, and we did see some of our canine friends.

Lucky for you…we’re willing to share.

Great way to start the year! Stellar sunrise pictures, extra cute pix of the Kahala beach dog gang. There’s a spiritual look to the people watching the sunrise on the first day of the year.

A Healthy New Year To All. The noise last night was appalling, overwhelming! Bah fireworks please! They are a detriment to good physical and mental health! The lovely photos soothe my soul. Thank you.

So, um, did a single person get cited for illegal fireworks, and did a single car get towed for stopping on H1 to watch, as HPD threatened? And did a single news outlet even bother to ask?
