To the cats, it’s just another day. Play in the dark to wake up the people. Eat. Play some more, then nap while they’re out walking. Wake up, and annoy the people while they try to eat breakfast. If he doesn’t pay attention, give him a little bite. Run if/when the dreaded squirt bottle appears. Take turns in the spot of morning sun. Time for another nap. And so it goes through the day.
I dig figure something out this week. Based on direct observation, it appears Ms. Kali is trying to assert herself as the dominant cat. One day I watched a she strolled out of our small front bedroom, home to the futon that she considers her own, and out into the short hallway where Kinikini was heading her way. Without a pause, she walked over and then gave him a quick 1-2-3 whacks in the face. There may have been claws in there, not enough to do damage but plenty enough to send a “don’t mess with me” message.
I’ve seen the same scene repeated multiple times as Kali struts her stuff around the house. Right now, she has claimed the sun spot under the skylights, leaving Kini watching from across the room. And this morning I saw her come out and take a few swings at Kinikini while he was scratching around in the litter box in “her” room. Oh, I could feel the humiliation as we quickly exited. And we’ve noticed Kali letting Bessie know that the new pecking order as well.
Further observation will tell if my assessment is correct.
In any case, do enjoy the weekly appearance of our Kahala cats!
