I’m no longer clear what is happening in Honolulu’s federal district court this morning.
The court’s online system reported on Sunday that John Stancil, Mike Miske’s half-brother and only remaining co-defendant, had entered a last-minute guilty plea under a new case number based on a charge filed by “information,” which bypasses the need for a grand jury indictment. Separately, an entry in the Miske case docket vacated Stancil’s trial and any related deadlines.
But this morning’s court calendar lists a 7:15 a.m. hearing before Judge Derrick Watson for the same purpose.
So it’s suddenly somewhat unclear whether Stancil has already entered his guilty plea or not.
But I have to stick with the official court dockets indicating the proceedings, including Stancil’s arraignment and plea, took place on Sunday. The information appears in the new case file with the Stancil “information,” and separately in the docket of the Miske case. It seems to me that’s as official as it gets.
Perhaps the calendar entry was made in anticipation of a Monday arrangment, which is no longer necessary.
Adding to the confusion–I thought I had seen a while back that Stancil and Miske were housed together at the Federal Detention Center.
Hopefully it will all be sorted out soon.
