Two weeks ago, we snatched The-Cat-Now-Known-As-Kiko from her outside world around the Kahala Beach Condominium and the Kahala Hotel. It’s hard to know just how these rescues are going to turn out. Bessie still gets harassed by Kinikini, and she’s been with us for almost three years.

But Kiko’s integration into the feline family is going better than we ever expected. She’s been sniffed and has suffered the indignity of several displays of dominance with good humor. Well, actually, she stood her ground, flopped on her side in a fighting position, paws and claws out, and let her soft growl tell the big cats that it was time to stand back.

She has quickly made herself at home in almost every part of the house, with all the big cats giving her lots of space.

Meals still present a management problem. Kiko should eat the kitten food that I’ve bought, but she really wants to eat the same food as the big cats. She’s even gotten away with cleaning out their dishes as they stood back and watched. I’ve tried to compensate by leaving out dry kitten food that she can snack on throughout the day. But that means the other cats can snack on those extra calories as well. And, as you can tell by the photos, this is the last thing they need!

In any case, here come the cats. All four of them.
