Hey, cat people. I’m looking for recommendations for a cat water fountain that gives our cats another hydration option.
We have three water bowls scattered around the house. A few years ago, we tried a water fountain with pump, but over time it proved to be impossible to disassemble and keep clean. It now sits in a closet.
But I’ve seen ads for newer models which claim to make them simpler to clean, some operating wirelessly and even without using traditional pumps.
If you use one of these gizmos and have had a positive experience, please share your thoughts.
Three of our cats are surreptitious drinkers, and I only occasionally catch them at the water bowls. Kinikini is different.
He insists on dipping a front paw into the water, then licking his foot. Sometimes he’ll wade in with two front paws. His next stop is often to jump on me with his wet foot (sometimes both front feet are wet).
I don’t know how he would handle an active water fountain, but we would keep the other water bowls in use in any case.
Please share your experiences, please!

Our cat, Smokey, used to dip his paw in the water bowl and fling the water all over the place before drinking.
Now we have a AOOGITF Stainless Steel (Cat) Water Fountain which has easy to install and easy to change filter system. It is a plug in but that’s no problem for us.
I just checked my past Amazon orders. I purchased the Catit Flower water fountain November 2018
It has been working very well with monthly filter changes and pump cleaning. When we had a power outage my husband used a skewer to spin the impeller and the pump started back up and it has continued pumping away. Living on the beach, I stay away from items that might rust, which is why I chose the all plastic with the cute flower fountain.
Recently I have been adding Oxyfresh water additive for dental care. I started gradually and increased per instructions.
I have an old plastic Veken water fountain I bought on Amazon. The cats aren’t wild about the waterfall part of it, but it keeps the water circulating, and they drink around it. You can buy replacement filters and I change them every couple of months. I top off the water level once a day. I probably like it more than they do!
I can’t remember the name of our water fountain because we’ve had it sooo long. It may not be manufactured anymore. One recommendation is to get a dog-sized fountain since you have a multiple-kitty household. The cat fountain didn’t work for us when we had 3 cats, hence the bigger one we have now. It’s probably time to replace it so I’ll be watching the recommendations here. The fountain made a big difference for our three boys. One was adverse to drinking still water from a bowl so he hardly drank and had constant vet visits for urinary problems and was facing possible surgery to remove crystals. He loved the moving water in the fountain, however, and the crystals dissolved. We never had to take him to the vet again for urinary problems. He was a big Ragdoll over 20 pounds and died at 20 of old age. He used to stick his paw into the still-water bowl too, but didn’t do it with the fountain. I think he couldn’t gauge the depth of still water but could see it with the moving water. Of the 3 boys, he was the only one who also drank from the waterfall. We’re down to only Miss Pepper now, who drinks constantly from her still-water bowl and only occasionally from the fountain, so go figure! It didn’t bother the boys, but I think Pepper doesn’t like sharing the fountain with the dog.
I had one back in colorado, old school, like 20 years ago.
There’s several on the market and i recently googled “best cat fountain” and found one easily gotten from Amazon. I haven’t gotten it yet and may not, this new kitten drinks like a champ from the dogs’ water (!!!).
What I do remember about the fountain is that it has to be cleaned a lot. the mouth bacteria just reproduces so quickly it gets icky quick. Now, I don’t know about the new ones, but my old one was a PIA to clean. PLUS i had dogs who really preferred the cat fountain to their water so the ick was exponentially accelerated.
please let us know which one you get and how you like it!!!!
By the way- I have a 2 second video of our cat drinking from the flowing fountain part of the apparatus.
If anyone cares to witness (we are clearly not cat fanatics!)
