The view from there

It was a few minutes after takeoff from Honolulu’s main airport, and suddenly there was this fine view of the islands to the east of Oahu.

Here are the islands in this lineup.

Closest to the camera is Molokai, with its mountainous east end in clouds. Behind Molokai are the West Maui Mountains, and behind them is Haleakala. Next are the Big Island peaks in the distance, Mauna Kea and, to the right and only partially visible, Mauna Loa.

I took this with my iPhone 15 Pro, held in one hand and reaching across Meda to the window, as I attempted to aim in the right direction.

Do you suppose airline pilots ever get tired of this view?

Truly gorgeous photo! Ian, I’ve been reading your column for years now and since this is first time I’ve posted a comment, I want to use this opportunity to thank you for your persistent excellence in reporting with meticulous attention to details. Your Miske case series was truly mesmerizing. Thanks to you and Civil Beat, we in Hawai?i have sources for news beyond the surface that we need and want to know.

Beautiful! I think this stunning view is the “stuff” that keeps pilots loving their work …

For the last 50 years I have been an International Airline Pilot. No, you never get tired of looking out of the big windows on the flight deck. And yes, seeing those islands after being gone for 2 weeks in someother part of the world is a great welcome home to Oahu.
