We’re traveling, but it’s Feline Friday and the cats are ready!

Yup. We’ve abandoned them again for most of a week.

But the show must go on!

And they’re ready and waiting.

I don’t think they need any introduction, but the cast of cats consists of:

Kali, the first in this cohort to enter our household, and the first we adopted from a cat colony at the top of Aiea Heights. We were told that she had been there for several years, was very friendly, and really deserved to be adopted. It took a while for her to adjust, but all those things turned out to be true.

Kinikini, originally known as Mr. Marbles, was adopted from the same Aiea colony. He turned out to be FIV positive, so we have to be careful about any infections to keep them under control. He was rumored to be one of Kali’s kittens, but it’s hard to say for sure. He thinks he is in charge as the Alpha-Cat, but Kali has her own ideas about that. Oh, one of the meanings of “kinikini” in Hawaiian is marbles, or the game of marbles.

Bessie was our third rescue from the same Aiea cat colony, but she was different. She had only recently shown up there, likely dumped by a previous owner. So she has turned out to be naive in some of the ways of the cat world. As a result, it’s kind of three-against-one. The other three tend to pick on Bessie, and she hadn’t learned to deal with such things. She’s extremely friendly to people, even visitors, but still has trouble navigating the little artificial world our cats live in.

And, finally, Ms. Kiko. We grabbed her from the grounds o the Kahala Hotel in September when she was about five months old and pregnant. She is a really good cat, wise in the ways of cats, and has become Kinikini’s best friend and prime playmate. She is also an avid fan of bird watching, which usually consumes at least a couple of hours of her days.

Okay, the stage is set, and here they are.

Still love Miss Bessie’s peaceful face. Sad that the other cats bully her. God forbid, but is it possible she is not well? Sometimes the group will bully a member that isn’t well. One of our kitties had undiagnosed diabetes and the other cats (and the dogs) used to pick on him. We felt such awful guilt that we hadn’t noticed he was sick until it was too late.

We attribute it to the short time she spent living in the cat colony. She had dumped by someone, and quickly identified as very friendly and able to be adopted. As a result, she didn’t benefit from learning the proper etiquette and ways of managing relations with other cats. I may make it sound worse than it actually is, because it disturbs us as well.
