Time flies

Back in May 1956, I posed for a photo in front of a walkway at Kahala Elementary School near my classroom. It was the end of my year in 3rd grade. I entered Kahala School in the second grade in 1954, the year the school opened, and my class graduated from the 6th grade in 1959, the year of Hawaii statehood.

Many classmates went on to Punahou after finishing 6th grade at Kahala Elementary.

I expect that some of them are in Honolulu this week for the Punahou reunion weekend, so this flashback in in their honor.

In any case, I found that old 1956 snapshot, and then copied my boyhood image into a photo taken in about the same spot in 2015, about 59 years later, so that we—the young and much older me—appear to be standing side by side.

I find it a little spooky, but interesting to look at.

The 2015 photo was taken the day of the school’s 60th anniversary party, which I basically crashed. I posted that tale, and the two separate photos, back at that tine.

    Thank you for sharing.
You witnessed a lot of changes and you are blessed to be living still in the neighborhood of your youth.

No AI. I just snipped my third grade self out of the old photo and dropped it onto the newer photo after getting it to the proper size. If you follow the link back to the earlier post with the two separate photos, you can see that in the “adult” photo, I’m holding something in my hand. In the next generation copy, the details are lost, making it look like an enlarged thumb extends out to include whatever I was holding.

Love this. It’s a retrospective that goes back to the future at the same time. Parallel universes. Makes me think of the thousands of children who have walked along that breezeway over the past 60 years, including my two kids. They have come and gone from the school, but never left and will always be part of it in their hearts.
