On this day in 1965

On June 5, 1965, the Class of 1965 graduated from University High School, now a public charter school known as University Laboratory School. The graduation took place at Andrews Amphitheater on the University of Hawaii campus.

According to a newspaper clip I found online, there were 88 in our graduating class. U.S. Senator Dan Inouye, then a first-term senator, was the speaker. It was a natural connection, as his wife taught at the school for years. My sister was in her class. I never had the experience.

This weekend the Punahou Class of 1965 is having our 60th reunion, with a brunch/beach clean up in Waimanalo, a lunch at the Natsunoya Tea House, A memorial service and lunch at The Outrigger Canoe Club and, of course, the annual Punahou Alumni Luau.
Our class was peopled with some greats: Charlie Wedemeyer, Dr. Alan Richardson, Hawaii State Supreme Court Judge Robert Klein, and many others.
We considered ourselves much too clever and sophisticated to call “The Class of ’65.” Instead we are “The Class of LXV.” It’s now on our new tote bags, name tags and luggage tags.

It’s still a beautiful ceremony at Andrews. I’ve been to many graduations, and there’s no setting more special than Andrews. Even if I don’t know the kids well, or at all with a lot of them, it’s still moving to be a part of the that Jr. Bow ‘Ohana ceremony tradition, and to watch the lei giving by family and friends afterwards.
