Tuesday was the visit to Hawaii Kai Veterinary Clinic to see Dr. Ann Sakamoto.
The patients this time around were Bessie and Kiko. On the drive to Hawaii Kai, we were serenaded throughout the drive by the feline chorus. Interestingly, on the drive home it was total silence,In this picture, Ann is checking out the spots on Kiko’s feet!
Kiko weighed in at 10.8 pounds. Bessie was 11.8. They aren’t small cats, but they are way short of Romoeo’s 19 pounds in his prime.
Both have had dental issues in the past, and still do, but they were doing better than expected. No need for a separate dental appointment this year, although I’ll be shifting then back to eating Science Diet TD, which is supposed to reduce plaque & tartar build-up.
They also both got vaccine updates. Kiko’s was a double whammy. Ann warned us that Kiko’s leg be a little sore where she got the injection, and both might feel a bit under the weather for a day or so. They seemed fine when we got home, but by late afternoon Kiko had gone to sleep in the Amazon box, didn’t come for food, was in the box all night, and was still in the box when I got up the next morning. It took her most of the next day before she started moving around to display her limp.
We knew she was on the mend when she was able to jump onto our bed and join Kinikini in a late Wednesday afternoon nap, but wasn’t until Thursday morning that she appeared to be back to “normal.”
So here we are on Feline Friday, and the cats are ready to make their appearances.

I felt the same after my covid shot yesterday. It was suggested to me to try the Novavax vaccine this time vs one of the mRNA versions, due to fewer side effects, but that was not my experience. I woke up in the middle of the night in a puddle of sweat with a huge headache, which remains. This one also hurt more going in but that could have been due to the skill level of the pharmacist. I wasn’t too impressed with that person at Longs Kailua. Couldn’t answer any of my questions and suggested I consult Dr Google for the answers while I waited. I like Walgreens better but they didn’t have Novavax.
I have to recommend that you look into a product called Plaque Off. It is a powder and it is for dogs and cats and it reduces the tartar on teeth. I have used it on both dogs and cats for many years with great success. Dental care is expensive, especially for 4 cats, and not to mention the trauma of going through it for the animal. It is easier to use on wet food than dry obviously, but it is far less expensive than teeth extractions. The best part is that you would not have to change their food!
I’ll try it. It’s success depends on whether it gets eaten. For a powder, it sounds like it goes on wet food. Right now, only about 1/3 of their diet is wet food, so I’ll just have to experiment. It doesn’t sound like it can do any harm. My earlier experiment with a liquid additive (Healthy Mouth) that went in their water was a spectacular failure. Even heavily diluted, they didn’t like it and their water intake fell dramatically (we have two water fountains, one on each side of the house, so can monitor how much they drink. After a while, I decided it was more important to keep up their water intake than to worry about teeth (we’ve had several cats in the past that ended up toothless, and it didn’t seem to slow them down much). Anyway, I’ll give Plaque Off a try.
