Anyone else remember the Mighty Mouse theme?

When I was a kid, we used to have movie nights in our living room.

My father would drag the old, finicky, 8mm projector out of a closet, along with a stack of home movies spliced together, featuring endless scenes (some actually in focus) of my sister, Bonnie; my mother’s dog, Kiki; and a few scenes in which a two or three year-old Ian appeared.

But the treat of the night would be the Mighty Mouse film, silent, short, but full of energy.

And we could all sing the theme song since MM shorts often appeared in theaters before the main features, providing plenty of time to become familiar. Later, I would be dropped off to spend Saturday morning at the Porky Pig Club in the Kaimuki Theater, where unruly kids cheered the movies on the big screen.

Every once in a while I can’t stifle the memory, “Here I come to save the day….”

Anyway, here’s a version.

That brought back memories, Ian. I also remember the great (and rather odd) Andy Kaufman, whose shtick was very early sort of karaoki .He would bring on stage an old fashioned record player placed on a stool, and play the MM theme, lip syncing the entire song .

Yes! “Here he comes to save the day! That means that Mighty Mouse is on the way!” I still have Tom Terrific and Rocky and Bullwinkle in my head too! I hope your Mighty Mouse is in the form of your surgeon! Sending you much aloha.

I certainly remember MM. I also treasure my memories of going to the movies with my six year old friends. If it was an MGM film we hid behind the seats until the lion’s roar was over. I still feel a bit scared whenever I hear it. A key memory: we went to the movie theater in a pack with no adults in sight and no fear. If issues came up we had to figure it out ourselves.

    Ian,
I certainly do and could sing it today. I hope you’re feeling good. When I was in recovery I watched South Pacific just to enjoy the view. The score is always a favorite.

Absolutely! I think I remember it more from Saturday morning TV cartoons than from the movies, but I still sometimes come out with that line too.

And Terrytoons, the studio producing Mighty Mouse, always reminded me ot Terrytown, a riverbank village between Scottsbluff and Gering, Nebraska, that was developed by a windbag and state senator named Terry Carpenter.

Well, at every medical interaction I’m asked about the level of pain.

Honestly, I haven’t experienced any pain.

That’s huge from my perspective at least.

How fun to remember the Kaimuki theatre! Often we sat in the front row! What independence we young kids had.
