Sunday morning (photographs)

Two images from a lazy Sunday morning in Kaaawa.

The top photo was taken as we reached Swanzy Beach Park around 6 a.m. this morning. The sun was managing to break through some heavy clouds, sending rays of light in several directions. What a great sight for these lucky campers to wake up to.

The photo below shows the erosion along the stretch of beach just a short distance in the Kaneohe direction from the restrooms at Kaaawa Beach Park. As you can see, several feet of sand has gone walkabout. The roots of the coconut and false Kamani trees along the road have been exposed for a couple of years, to one degree or another. But this is about as bad as it has ever been, and it’s looking like this is more than seasonal erosion. I fear these trees will be lost somewhere in the intermediate term. Maybe not this year, but I don’t think they’ll survive much longer. If they do, safety concerns may necessitate their removal.

Another morning on the beach in Kaaawa (photographs)

It’s been hot and humid for the past week, broken up only slightly by the intermittent reappearance of the tradewinds.

This morning was more of the same, with rain trying to decide whether or not to drift towards shore. It managed to stay out to sea, at least while we were walking. No need to deploy our umbrellas.

Starting another week with a walk at dawn

It’s been hot and humid. Sometime early this morning, it rained lightly. The clouds hung on as dawn approached.

The sun was just making its appearance as we reached Swanzy Beach Park, after walking down the hill from our house, along Lihimauna Road to the fire station, then across the highway to the park. A friend who lives across from the park was doing a few laps. We aren’t that ambitious.

The road was still damp. A few blades of grass that appear over that wall closest to the road catch the light nicely. And that’s Meda just ahead of me on the other side of the road. It all made for a good photo.

Monday morning campers in Kaaawa

When we passed Swanzy Beach Park early this morning, there was a large encampment that was enjoying an extended weekend.

The sun had just come up and the shadows of the coconut trees spread out across the park towards the camera.

The kind of scene that deserves being shared.
